Following a unanimous vote to support our bid to renovate the William H. Whitehouse, Northern Homes CDC applied for an Affordable Housing Program Grant through the Federal Home Loan Bank of Indianapolis which awarded the maximum amount of $500,000. The historic building was converted to 5 apartments in the 1970’s, was abandoned between 2008 and 2009, and was eventually foreclosed on by Charlevoix County for unpaid property taxes in April of 2013. Northern Homes CDC renovated the home into four affordable senior apartments.
In 1903 William Howard White built the historic William H. White House for his family to live in after establishing himself as the lumber baron of Northwest Michigan in 1885. According to the Pearl Street Historic District’s Preliminary Historic District Report, W.H. White invested heavily in sawmills, rail construction, and other wood-related industries. The area prospered from the late 1880’s until the 1920’s as the lumber capital of Northwest Michigan.
